Symposia Community Events – September 2005

The West Village discussion group is open to anyone who loves to make new friends and find ways of improving personal or community life. The meetings have rotating facilitators who come up with specific subjects, but people who attend shape the conversation and this gives a different flavor to every meeting. The discussion is respectful, open, and creative and there is no pressure to contribute. Everybody is welcome. There is a minimum $5 order per person.

The group meets every Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Caffe Dell Artista on 46 Greenwich Ave. NY.

Great way to meet new people from Hoboken, Jersey City and surrounding areas, and engage in thoughtful discussions about various issues relating to Christianity, in a laid-back open environment.

Dinner is served at the beginning of each session, giving people the chance to chat and get to know each other.

First session (10/4) is open to anyone who thinks they may be interested but not sure. Bring a friend if you wish, have dinner, and the Alpha folks will fill you in with more details.

After years of looking, Sophia has finally gotten a job – teaching tough blue-collar college kids literature. She is terrified by the prospect, terrified by the other professors who treat her with condescension, terrified by the students who mostly ignore her. In summary, she is terrified of everything in her life.

On her first day going to work, she is locked out of her apartment, involved in a car accident, late for class, and humiliated by the department chairperson. A typical day. The only respote from all of this is her best frined, Emily, who is pregnant and a successful TV producer. Emily is sure of herself and sure of everything and everyone. She knows how to fix any problem. Tha, of course, depresses Sophia even more.

Sophia’s search for a psychiatrist is equally fraught with angst. When she does find a psychiatrist who truly wants to help her, she falls madly in love with him – an ethical nightmare. To complicate matters further, one of her students becomse infatuated with her – another ethical crisis. The other students could care less about learning the greats of literature which they see as irrelevant to their lives.

With every strike in the book against her, Sophia finally triumphs, overcomes depression and becomes her own woman in both surprising and life-affirming ways.

Jim and his wife Beverly Ann have resided in Hoboken almost 40 years. They have one daughter, Polly, who also lives in Hoboken. Jim, a conceptual artist and filmmaker also was the founder and former director of the Hoboken Historical Museum, established in 1986.

Daniel Simpson will read from his memoir about the ten years he and his brother lived at the Overbrook School for the Blind as well as a selection of poems. Dan studied poetry with Judith Moffett and Gregory Djanikian while earning an M.A. in English at the University of Pennsylvania. For the past five years, he has apprenticed with Molly Peacock in poetry and memoir writing. His work has appeared in Prairie Schooner, The Cortland Review, Hampden-Sydney Poetry Review, The Atlanta Review, and Philomel, among others. In 2003, he received a
Fellowship in Literature from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
