Independent Film Night: HAVANA MI AMOR
Thursday, September 1st, 2005
Time: 8:00 PM
Location: Symposia Bookstore
510 Washington St.
Hoboken, NJ 07030
Map and Directions
Information: From the fiery capital of Cuba comes a fun-filled portrait of the real, vibrant lives of Cubans encompassed by love and passion. Following the everyday lives of five locals, director Gaulke lets the audience learn the dos and donts of love life in Havana. Though their work lives may seem routine, the stories of love, betrayal, affairs, and marriage that they confide to us are juicy and entertaining. Most amusing and endearing are the tales from both sexes on how to snag a superior lover amidst the multitudes of Cubans seeking a partner, a fling, or someone to financially support them. As we eagerly watch the spicy details of these real life Casanovas, they compare and contrast their real love lives with a popular Cuban soap opera. Havana Mi Amor is a rapturous look at frenetic relationships that, sometimes meaningful, sometimes brief, are nevertheless always awash with passion.

The Hoboken Digital Film Society is dedicated to bringing the best new independent films to a wider audience. It is our mission to promote and support independent filmmakers, to develop a nationwide network of alternative screening venues, and to expose audiences to a broader choice of films.

Independent Film Night: “The Hearing World Around Me”

Time: 8:00 PM
Location: Symposia Bookstore
510 Washington St.
Hoboken, NJ 07030
Map and Directions
Information: Film by Trix Bruce.

The Hearing World Around Me is a change of pace for the Hoboken Digital Film Society. Not so much an “independent film”, this personal video is of deaf actress Trix Bruce’s one-woman show in which she tells some of the hilarious, touching, and harrowing stories of her life as a deaf woman.

Performed in sign language and translated by Kenan Pekz, Trix’s stories will make you laugh and think. A simple performance played out in front of black curtains, The Hearing World Around Me is a very entertaining look into deaf culture.

The Hoboken Digital Film Society is dedicated to bringing the best new independent films to a wider audience. It is our mission to promote and support independent filmmakers, to develop a nationwide network of alternative screening venues, and to expose audiences to a broader choice of films.

Admission $5 includes food.

Tonights discussion will examine topics from the 2004 book Fire Your Boss by Stephan Pollan. Pollans view is that in the new millennium, employers offer little in the way of career growth, job satisfaction or even security. This new paradigm requires todays employee to realign their approach to work and life. The discussion will examine if Pollans views are accurate, and if so, what effect this will have on our economy and society in the future.

Book reading: THE ONLY BUSH I TRUST IS MY OWN by Periel Aschenbrand
Thursday, August 11

Time: 7:30 AM
Location: Symposia Bookstore
510 Washington St.
Hoboken, NJ 07030
Map and Directions
Information: Periel Aschenbrand loathes Internet dating, Republicans, TV, junk food, and stockbrokers. She is twenty-eight years old, lives in New York and Los Angeles, accessorizes Dolce & Gabbana with a “F*ck Bush” necklace, and wakes up every morning to a double espresso with a “splash” of 2% milk. Predictable and pretentious, right? Wrong.

Periel Aschenbrand is also best friends with a Mormon, waits tables in Spanish Harlem, flirts with New York City cops, enjoys a good lap dance, gets revenge on snotty salespeople in an unconventional manner, and stayed in constant cell phone communication with her mother while protesting in her underwear at the Republican National Convention. “Are you provoking any policemen? You could be put in jail and get physically hurt by crack addicts who would see you as bait.”

In a refreshing nonfiction debut that’s never sanitized or slick, Periel delivers raunchy and hilarious truths about sex, politics, and how best to inspire the youth of America.
