If you can’t judge a book by its cover, you can’t call Hoboken’s Symposia a bookstore just because it sells books. In fact, it’s more like a community center that provides space for all kinds of activities and a place for people to meet and mingle.
Conversation groups known as the Salon have been held every Wednesday evening at 7:30 for the past four years and some 15 to 25 people on average attend to talk about anything and everything from freedom of speech to respect for differences. The topic and facilitator are listed on the Web site, www.Symposia.us. There are works of art displayed throughout the space that are available for purchase, and artists may exhibit in Symposia and have an opening reception. Five days a week, twice daily puppet shows are held for children 4 and older for a fee. Some 15 kids come to learn about basic principles of human relationships like sharing, caring, listening to others and obeying parents. |
