Monthly Updates – March 2024

What we loved this month

Meditation class, March 3 at 7 p.m. | $10, no registration required.

This class is the final class in a series journeying through Buddha’s meditation on the nature of the mind to overcome our tendency toward distraction. Participation in the whole series is not required as each class is self-contained. The theme for the final class is “unlocking our potential.”

Book club, March 7 at 7 p.m. | $5, to register email Yesenia at delossantosy369@gmail.com

Bookworm Baddies Book Club will discuss Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed. This book club is for bookish girlies that love to read as much as they love to yap. Whether you’re a seasoned reader or looking for a new hobby, this club is all about sharing thoughts, laughing at bookish quirks and maybe even getting sidetracked with life stories. Learn more by searching “Bookworm Baddies” on the Fable app.

Open mic, March 11 from 7:30 – 10 p.m. | $5 suggested donation, sign up to perform starting at 7:15

Whether you’re a poet, musician, or storyteller, come share an original piece or put your own spin on another’s work. We’ll have a PA, all you need to bring is your instrument and talent. Feel free to also bring your own snacks and beverages.

Knit & Lit, March 20 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. | $5

Whether you’re working on a sweater or a page-turner (or both!), Symposia has the perfect quiet event for you to make progress on your goals. Symposia transforms into a cozy comedy club every Friday night in March. Whether you’re a comedy lover or just looking for a fun night out, this is the perfect way to support local arts and enjoy some stand-up featuring Jersey and New York City comedians. BYOB!

Leader Hope Blosser has been practicing Zen Buddhism for three decades, most recently as a resident of Barry Magid’s Ordinary Mind Zendo in NYC. Magid combines Western psychology with traditional Zen practice to bring meditation into our lives right here and now. All are welcome, no experience needed. Beginner instruction at 5:30 followed by two, 25-minute periods of silent meditation (zazen) from 6 to 7.

Friend of the bookstore spotlight

Four days a week, dozens enjoy a free hot meal and a space to commune thanks to Lunchtime Ministry at St. Matthew Trinity Lutheran Church. More likely than not, you’ll find Spike there, who has warmly run the operation since 2016.

Lunchtime Ministry and Symposia have a few things in common. Both have been serving Hoboken for decades, and both count a diverse array of people among their clients and volunteers. Both, in short, are community centers. The partnership between our organizations began when Symposia manager Carmen Rusu began volunteering at Lunchtime Ministry in 2018. She then set up a program for Lunchtime Ministry guests to pick up a book at Symposia. After all, there’s nothing like a good book to accompany the best coffee in town!

Like Symposia, Lunchtime Ministry always welcomes new volunteers. Sign up by emailing volunteers@stmatthewtrinity.org or simply stop by the church at 8th and Hudson. Maybe, just maybe, you’ll be lucky enough to work alongside Spike.

Reminders

We stay in business by selling donated books, and you can bring your books to donate any time Symposia is open. We also welcome donations of shipping materials like bubble wrap and bubble mailers and envelopes. Peruse our Amazon store here.

We love welcoming new volunteers to help run the store. Give back to the community while joining the Symposia community at the same time! Call to learn more.
