Looking for a diverse and stimulating place to volunteer your time? Does the idea of community-building appeal to you? Look no further. At Symposia we have opportunities to fit a wide array of interests. Whether you are a people person who enjoys interacting with the community, a computer technician who welcomes a challenge or someone wanting to tackle poverty issues and international causes, you can carve your altruistic niche here. Our volunteers set their own pace and plan their own schedules. This flexibility affords you a way to serve the community without major changes to your current lifestyle. All you have to do is stop in and tell us what you enjoy doing most. If it’s not already in place, we’ll try to find a way to make it happen.
Guitar Circle – Thursdays at 8 pm
Come jam with local guitar players in a casual, friendly atmosphere. Share your favorite songs and learn new ones. All playing levels and styles are welcome!

Free Yoga Nidra Class – Wed Jan 15th at 7 pm
Yoga nidra is the art of conscious relaxation. This practice is accessible to everyone, regardless of mobility—it is actually a form of guided meditation, and it’s a great alternative for anyone who gets antsy trying to sit and “just breathe.” The magic of yoga nidra is that, by guiding you into a state between waking and sleep, it’s simultaneously soothing and empowering, relaxing the body and mind while opening the doors to deeper creativity and connection.
First class is FREE. Instructor: Dawn Raffel.

Dawn completed 200 hour teacher training at the Bhakti Center and an additional 50-hour certification in yoga nidra with Yogi Charu. She is a longtime Hoboken resident.

We of the Forsaken World – Book signing by Kiran Bhat – Monday Jan 13th at 7 pm
In a distant corner of the globe, a man journeys to the birthplace of his mother, a tourist town destroyed by an industrial spill. In a nameless remote tribe, the chief’s second son is born, creating a scramble for succession as their jungles are being destroyed by loggers. In one of the world’s sprawling metropolises, a homeless one-armed woman sets out to take revenge upon the men who trafficked her. And, in a small village of shanty shacks connected only by a mud-and- concrete road, a milkmaid watches the girls she calls friends destroy her reputation.
we of the forsaken world…, soon to be published by Iguana Books on January 22nd, 2020, is structured as a linguistic chain comprising the accounts of 16 people, connected along subtle lines, who indirectly witness these four narratively and geographically diverse central storylines. The story flows and recombines like digital connectivity, throwing into question pre-21st century assumptions about narrative logic and, I hope, embodying the way in which modern communication unites this planet every second, everywhere.
I am an Indian-American artist who has been to about 132 countries, lived in 18 corners of the world, and speaks 12 languages. I think my main goal in life is to communicate to others how important it is to consider the lives of other people, and in a global context, because borders are only a mental reality, and it is up to us to decide how much they in fact must matter. We are at a strange point in global politics where we can go one way, or another, and I really want to push us back towards the path of a unifying planet. I try to do this with my work, but I also want to do it with my words. I hope you give me the chance to speak.

Musical Open Mic Night – Thursday, Jan. 23rd at 7.30 pm
Join us for a night of shared musical talent. Sign up and play some tunes, or just come by and cheer us on!
BYOB (Bring your own bottle, banjo, or balalaika) with some munchies provided. Feel free to bring your own snacks to share.
Sign up starts at 7:30pm. Everyone gets to perform at least two songs, and original songs are encouraged. Test out your new material or play some cool cover songs. This is mostly an acoustic setup, although a small amp can be made available.
Refreshments will be served.
