Discover the joy, hope, and transformative power of community – lecture and discussion with Prof. John Bredin – April 25th at 7 pm
We are living in strange, even paradoxical times. Despite the ever-present technology that “connects” us, many have never felt lonelier or more isolated. Is our ancient human need to be together being sacrificed to the mega-time now spent on social media? Has staring blankly at the endless “breaking news” cycle on our TV sets replaced our desire for conviviality and connection?
I’d like this to be a cross between a town hall and a community dialogue. Perhaps, if we’re lucky, we may channel some of the magic energy of the late 1960s and early 70s; a glorious time of democratic awakening when Be-Ins were all the rage, and identity itself was seen as connected with belonging to a community of regard: very often in quest of a better state of things.
I am especially attracted to the magic “in between” space of authentic community, a transformative space of the kind Carl Rogers felt nudges us toward “becoming ourselves,” and Hannah Arendt believed allows us to “appear before others the best we know how to be.” As an educator, it has been a joy to create such communities with my students in several colleges over the past two decades, including Rutgers and CUNY.
Though my wife Claudia and I produce a nonprofit TV show on culture and ideas called Public Voice Salon, we won’t be filming this night. It will be a kind of sociological research for me, however—toward a future show we’d like to make on this topic—and I’m as eager to learn from you (especially your stories, hopes, and questions)—as I am to share my own thoughts and wonderings on this matter. Let’s see what we might teach each other!
As always, being together matters as much as what we talk about.

Puppetonia Puppet Shows at Symposia Bookstore
Since its inception, Puppetonia has taught children so much more than just their ABC’s and 123′s. The music and puppet shows incorporate important social skills, early academics, thinking skills, motor skills, and self-expression.
The music is fun and upbeat, and the children are encouraged to move to the rhythm, follow verbal instructions, practice sequential movements, and have a great time. And there are bubbles galore!
