Symposia Community Events – May 2019

510 Washington St, Hoboken NJ

Reading is a form of prayer, a guided meditation that briefly makes us believe we’re someone else, disrupting the delusion that we’re permanent and at the center of the universe. Suddenly (we’re saved!) other people are real again, and we’re fond of them. —George Saunders

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Symposia is looking for volunteers to help out at the Art and Music Festival in Hoboken on Sunday May 19th  from 10 am to 7 pm.  We need help moving books to and from the booth, manning the booth or the bookstore, shelving, or simply promoting the store. If you could spare an hour or two, please contact Carmen at 201-805-1739.

Donations are the lifeline of our business. If you have used books, CDs, DVDs, games, toys that you don’t want anymore, you can drop them off at our store and we’ll give you a tax-deductible receipt!

The Joy of Literature – Discussion with Prof. John Bredin – May 23rd at 7 pm

Unlike typical book club meetings (which focus on one book), this unique literary soiree takes a broader look at literary culture and the books that give our lives meaning.

Moderated by John Bredin, a Hoboken based writer and professor who hosts a nonprofit TV show on culture and ideas, this meeting hopes to transform the standard read-one-book-and talk-about it literary club into something more spontaneous and less like a homework assignment. A particular focus will be how our own lives have been changed by the writers who matter to us; with an emphasis on personal stories and open dialogue.

Though free and open to the public, donations are appreciated.

Space is limited so please RSVP at johnbredintv@gmail.com

Puppetonia Puppet Shows at Symposia Bookstore

Since its inception, Puppetonia has taught children so much more than just their ABC’s and 123′s. The music and puppet shows incorporate important social skills, early academics, thinking skills, motor skills, and self-expression.

The music is fun and upbeat, and the children are encouraged to move to the rhythm, follow verbal instructions, practice sequential movements, and have a great time. And there are bubbles galore!
