Symposia Community Events – October 2005

Openness, consideration and respect are the foundation elements of vibrant community experiences. The Symposia Conversation Project is an experiment in community dialogue where people of different beliefs and points of view can engage in meaningful discourse that enlightens, challenges and enriches the participants.

Food will be served at 7:30 and the conversation will start at 8 p.m.

The Hoboken Digital Film Society is dedicated to bringing the best new independent films to a wider audience. It is our mission to promote and support independent filmmakers, to develop a nationwide network of alternative screening venues, and to expose audiences to a broader choice of films.

Lori Sutherland, Directrix of Mama Gena’s School of Womanly Arts, will begin the conversation with her own journey into the discipline, the art, the science and the research of pleasure expansion followed by an open discussion.

Lori Sutherland has been invited to facilitate the conversation by John Bredin, who is the “Love Project” creator. 

The West Village discussion group is open to anyone who loves to make new friends and find ways of improving personal or community life. The meetings have rotating facilitators who come up with specific subjects, but people who attend shape the conversation and this gives a different flavor to every meeting. The discussion is respectful, open, and creative and there is no pressure to contribute. Everybody is welcome.

There is a minimum $5 order per person.

Amnesty International invites you to a panel discussion: Violence against Women as a Weapon of War: Causes and Consequences

“Join Amnesty International for the first in a series of panels bringing attention to war crimes against women. We’ll discuss how women are targeted during war and the legal and practical challenges in bringing criminals to justice and treating survivors.

At every event, there will be opportunities to take action. You can do something meaningful to help and we’ll make it easy for you.”

Speakers:

*Christine Hansen, Executive Director, The Miles Foundation (moderator), is an expert on gender violence associated with U.S. Armed Forces.

*Kelly Askin, Senior Legal Officer, International Justice, the Justice Initiative of the Open Society Institute, is the J. Skelly Wright Fellow at Yale Law School and served as legal advisor to the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.

*Bill Berkeley, Adjunct Professor of International Affairs at the School for International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, is former editorial writer for the New York Times and author of The Graves Are Not Yet Full ? Race, Tribe and Power in the Heart of Africa.

*Sonia Navani, Program Officer, Gender-Based Violence & Reproductive Health, International Rescue Committee, is a gender violence specialist with extensive experience in West and East Africa.

Panel discussion: Images of Women in Pop Culture
FREE

Distinguished panelists from a variety of disciplines will be discussing the pervasive nature of our media-driven culture, how women are portrayed in the media and pop culture, and how to promote positive images of women. In addition, we will be screening highlights of Jean Kilbourne�s award-winning documentary �Killing Us Softly,� which focuses on the portrayal of women in advertisements.

This program, which is now airing on PBS stations nationwide, paints a personal face on the ethnic cleansing that was forced upon the Kosovar Albanians by the Serbs in the spring of 1999. The documentary retraces the atrocities, hopes and dreams experienced by three young refugees currently living in the United States as well as their families and friends back in Kosova.

In addition to videotape of brothers Gentian and Plator Grezda and their friend Bekim Qela at a number of locations in the United States as they explore their new home, footage for From Refugee to Immigrant: A Story of Three Kosovar Albanian Americans encompasses scenes in Kosova where interviews include Kosova President Ibrahim Rugova. Also depicted in the program are several meetings in Israel with individuals who helped Gentian, Plator and Bekim when they fled to a refugee camp in Macedonia before they were flown to the United States.

Amy Torres is a New York City-based psychotherapist in private practice as well as a teacher, writer and dancer. Her writing has been featured in Adweek, Graphis, Creativity and Career Woman among other publications, and she has appeared on CNBC and AMC as a reporter and dancer respectively. No One Signs up to Become a Slave

Right now, thousands of men, women, and children in the tri-state area are forced to work against their will in households, sweatshops, construction sites, and adult clubs. An estimated 20,000 people are trafficked into the United Sates every year (as many as 700,000 are trafficked internationally) – many through and into New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. This October, Amnesty International presents a series of events to raise awareness of trafficking – and money for its victims – in collaboration with Safe Horizon, Tonic, Exit Art and Isadora Productions.

ARTIST TALK
Debra Pearlman’s evocative installation, Girlchild, evokes the isolation of young girls in captivity. Tonight, she’ll share stories and strategies for working with and about children. In conversation with Alison Boak and Jean Rilley from the International Organization for Adolescents. Presented by Amnesty International Firefly Project and Exit Art in conjunction with Exit Biennial II: Traffic, open through December 23, 2005.
