STARTING IN SEPTEMBER:  Ready to Write – 8 class course by John McCaffrey (Thursdays at 7 pm from Sept 8th to Oct. 27th

Do you have a desire to write but are not sure how to begin?  Has your writing hit a wall and you want to break through?  Or do you just want to develop further as a writer and land that publishing contract?  “Ready to Write,” a new 8-week course at Symposia Community Bookstore, will meet all these needs and, most importantly, you’ll have fun in a safe, supported and creative environment.

Classes, led by award-winning novelist and Hoboken resident John McCaffrey (jamccaffrey.squarespace.com), will be held Thursday evenings, September 8 to October 27th.  Each session will be 75 minutes in length (7 pm to 8:15 pm) and will feature the following elements:

  • A brief, motivational talk on various topics, such as working through writing blocks and staying committed to a project once started.
  • A short meditation period to reflect and clear the mind for creativity.
  • An in-class writing exercise based on a prompt related to the featured topic.
  • A group discussion of the in-class writing exercise.

Class members will also have the chance to submit a longer work (up to 25 pages) – either completed or in process, which the instructor will read and provide written critique and a private consultation on next steps, including publishing opportunities.

The course cost is $100.  Space is limited, so those interested in joining must R.S.V.P. and provide 1/2 deposit ($50) to John McCaffrey by August 26th.  To R.S.V.P, arrange for the deposit, or ask questions about the course, please contact John at jamccaffrey@eartlink.net or call him at 917-239-5306.

A Dialogue of Hope – workshop facilitated by John Bredin – Monday, Aug. 8th at 7 pm

What makes you hopeful about the future?  Despite the many problems in society, absent a hopeful vision of a better possible world that might be—one that’s more just, loving, and peaceful—very often people drift into a state of numbness, apathy, and despair.  Many of today’s politicians and media pundits deride the idea of a hopeful better world as too “utopian” and not “realistic” enough.  Tonight we will gather together to resist this cynicism.  Our agenda will be musings on the happier world that, deep down, many of us still believe is possible.  Sitting in a circle, we will share the stories that keep us strong, along with the hopes—some personal and some political—that motivate our morning leap out of bed.  Given the cognitive value of the Arts, and of how, as Emily Dickinson said, “Imagination lights the slow fuse of the possible,” I hope that our dialogue will be enriched by stories of our encounters with literature, cinema, theater, music, and dance.

Workshop presenter John Bredin is the author of 12 books, including The Magic of Everyday Life and Hope is a Quest.  He’s taught English at various colleges, including Stevens, Rutgers, and Montclair State, and is host of the weekly cable TV show Public Voice Salon.

Tuition $25

Light refreshments

Please RSVP, since the circle will be capped at 10 people to allow maximum “story time” for our big dreamers by email to John at jfbredin@hotmail.com
