Welcome to the University of Hope – A Real Education at the Theater – with John Bredin – Friday June 9th at 7 pm

Professor John Bredin’s second one man show will transform Symposia into a mini theater university classroom.

Not to worry, though: there will be no grades, and no tests! The focus of the “curriculum” will be personal stories, along with creative and social growth. The desired outcome is to feel different after the play. Transformed into a better person and citizen. More likely to engage with literature and the various arts. More eager to share your story, and listen to the stories of others. More likely to make the world a better place.

And more hopeful. This work was inspired by Professor Bredin’s frustration with the corporate turn our universities have recently made, replacing the humanities with “marketing 101.” A question at the heart of Bredin’s work is: Why is education more concerned today with job training than in producing empathic, joyful, and thoughtful citizens?

Bredin has taught English at the college level for many years. With the help of his wife Claudia Canasto Chibuque, he co-produces a weekly TV show on education, the arts, and social change called Public Voice Salon. The show, launched at Symposia in 2010, has featured some of the world’s leading intellectuals and cultural figures.

Be sure to experience this provocative new “work in progress” piece now. Before it goes to Broadway! Running time 1.5 hours. Interactive and dialogic. The suggested “tuition” is 10 dollars.

Scholarships available.

On the west coast of Ireland 995 AD it is the eve of Samhain, the night that is “the wedge between two worlds, prying open the mouth of the hollow hills when the spirits from the Other Side coming spilling out all over Ireland.” But why should Svana fear the spirits when her own ancestors walk among them? “There are those who walk abroad on Samhain whose souls you’d not want for traveling companions.” By the fire of the hermit’s hut the beginning of the Northman’s tale will soon become her own, forcing Svana far beyond her home on the strand and deep into the mythical past. For the believers of folklore and fantasy alike, the tale of Dagda and Danu will strike a chord where the worlds of myth and reality reverberate, where all dimensions converge.
