Symposia Community Events –September 2017

 SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Symposia is looking for volunteers to help out at the Art and Music Festival in Hoboken on September 24th  from 10 am to 7 pm.  We need help moving books to and from the booth, manning the booth, shelving, or simply promoting the store. If you could spare an hour or two, please contact Carmen at 201-805-1739.(We give free books to our volunteersJ)

 Donations are the lifeline of our business. If you have used books, CDs, DVDs, games, toys that you don’t want anymore, you can drop them off at our store and we’ll give you a tax-deductible receipt!

 Musical Open Mic Night – Thursday, Sept. 21st at 7.30 pm

Join us for a night of shared musical talent. Sign up and play some tunes, or just come by and cheer us on!

BYOB (Bring your own bottle, banjo, or balalaika) with some munchies provided. Feel free to bring your own snacks to share.

Sign up starts at 7:30pm. Everyone gets to perform at least two songs, and original songs are encouraged. Test out your new material or play some cool cover songs. This is mostly an acoustic setup, although a small amp can be made available.

Poetry in Autumn: Get Fresh Books Poets Read from Recent & Forthcoming Collections – Saturday, Sept. 23rd at 6.30 pm

 Get Fresh Books LLC is a cooperative press, where our authors, editors, and the publisher create and pursue a vision for the writer’s work.

We hold no publication contests, request no submission fees, and conduct no open reading periods. We read pitches and seek out emerging talent.

Our chief concern is to provide opportunities for underrepresented voices in publishing

Lynne McEniry is a New Jersey poet. She directs the Academic Success Center at College of Saint Elizabeth. Her website is http://www.lynnemceniry.com/

Marina Carreira is a Luso-American writer from Newark, NJ. She is curator and co-host of “Brick City Speaks”, a monthly reading series in Newark. Her full collection of poems is forthcoming from Get Fresh Books.

Victor Alcindor serves as an English teacher at West Orange High School in New Jersey. His first collection, Stand Mute, is forthcoming from Get Fresh Books.

Come and join us to explore Hajime Sugawara’s Photography Exhibition – “HOME”

Being away from home for close to three decades, the artist and his lenses will take us through moments of life that remind us of the intimate, comfortable, peaceful and timeless places that we call home: Places that give us meaning, spread between the roots of our yesterdays and the wings of our tomorrows.

Reception and talk with the artist from 1 to 3 pm. Refreshments and snacks will be served.

The  art will be exhibited from 11 am to 6 pm

Free Yoga Class –  Every Wednesday at 7 pm

 Have you always shied away from Yoga because you thought you weren’t very flexible?

Symposia is now opening its doors to a new environment for yoga practice: small classes, taught in a supportive, non-competitive manner, with individual attention.  Students will be gently guided through basic yoga postures, yogic breathing, meditation, and relaxation techniques.

Suggested donation: $8

Swing Dance Classes –  Instructor Tracy Everitt, Liza Minnelli’s Dance Partner – Every Tuesday at 7 pm
