Symposia Community Events – May 2013
Symposia is looking for volunteers to help out at the Art and Music Festival in Hoboken on May 5, from 10 am to 7 pm. We need help moving books to and from the booth, manning the booth, shelving, or simply promoting the store. If you could spare an hour or two, please contact Carmen at 201-805-1739.
Also, during the month of May, a couple of Symposia employees will be away, so any amount of time you can volunteer to help us out would also be greatly appreciated!
$5 Yoga Class – Every Wednesday at 7 pm
Have you always shied away from Yoga because you thought you weren’t very flexible?
Symposia is now opening its doors to a new environment for yoga practice: small classes, taught in a supportive, non-competitive manner, with individual attention. Students will be gently guided through basic yoga postures, yogic breathing, meditation, and relaxation techniques.
After the class, feel free to linger, have a cup of tea, chat. Refreshments will be served.

“Shadows & Wings” – Book Launch & Author Signing: – Sunday May 5th at 3pm
Local author and theatre/writing teaching artist Niki Tulk will be reading from her acclaimed debut novel “Shadows & Wings” and signing copies for this special event. “The Untold Story of Princess Doe: As seen on CNN and America’s Most Wanted” by Christie Napurano – book reading and signing – May 7th at 7 pm
Thirty-one years ago, the bludgeoned body of a teenage girl was found in a cemetery in the rural farm town of Blairstown, New Jersey. Her untimely death captured the hearts of the townspeople, who dubbed her “Princess Doe”, and kept the rest of the nation on the edge of their seats waiting for a resolution that never came. To date, the case is still open, and Princess Doe remains as nameless and faceless as the day she was found. Who was she? And how did she end up here? Based on one of the saddest true unsolved crime stories in New Jersey’s history, “The Untold Story of Princess Doe” begins two years before the young girl’s untimely demise and discovery, creating a harrowing fictional account that gives a name and a story to a girl who has been anonymous for far too long.

“The Ethical Sales Agent: a Transformative Sales Pedagogy to Liberate Corporate Culture & Save America” by John Bredin – book reading and signing on May 14th at 7 pm
No, “ethical sales” needn’t be an oxymoron! After a successful 20-year career as a liberating English teacher, John Bredin entered the cut-throat world of modern corporate culture (as a real estate agent) and was horrified by the nihilism he encountered there. From the stimulating “groves of academe,” where the main “business” is caring about ideas and the world—and nurturing the growth of people—he entered a cruel, back-stabbing realm dominated by fast talking slicksters and rife with a sense of emptiness and alienation. Not one to back down from a challenge, however (after all, he was the “rescue mission” teacher in 3 troubled NYC ghetto schools) John’s response to this existential crisis was to write a book proposing a radical transformation of corporate culture. In brief, this involves channeling forward his humane pedagogical values (which include a quest for a world that’s more kind, loving, just, and peaceful) into a dehumanized corporate space. The result is a revolutionary re-imagining of the “sales project” to include a concern for the growth of people, the environment, and our democracy. John will talk a little bit about why he wrote this book, read a brief excerpt, then open the floor up to dialogue.

PUPPETONIA – Puppet Shows for Babies and Toddlers
Since its inception, Puppetonia has taught children so much more than just their ABC’s and 123′s. The music and puppet shows incorporate important social skills, early academics, thinking skills, motor skills, and self-expression.
The music is fun and upbeat, and the children are encouraged to move to the rhythm, follow verbal instructions, practice sequential movements, and have a great time. And there are bubbles galore!

Puppet Yoga for Babies – Every Wednesday at 12:30-1:30 beginning April 10th
PUPPETONIA is starting a new class for babies (5 weeks to crawling)
You will learn baby yoga techniques that will help with your infant’s sleep cycles, digestion and fussiness. Silly songs, toys, puppets, hugs, kisses and giggles make this a not to be missed class experience for you and your infant.
Gentle baby asanas and massages are also incorporated to help you learn how to calm and teach basic motor development to your baby. You will learn appropriate, therapeutic strokes for each area of the body, as well as ways to bring body awareness to your baby, without overstimulation.
Yoga practiced with your baby is a powerful way to connect with your new child and opportunity to join or create a community of new mothers and friends with similar goals and parenting styles.
Class taught by Carmen Rusu, Yoga Alliance and Karma Kids certified teacher.
