| Information: | Our Thanksgiving Party this year was such a smashing success, that we’ve decided to extend the good cheer and merrymaking by inviting you all to our End of Year Party on December 19, Wednesday at 7 p.m. We will provide chicken, mashed potatoes, and a salad. Please bring a dish/dessert/side/drink. The dress is casual, as we would like to dance after dinner! Please let us know if you will be able to join us, so we can plan accordingly. | Information: | Two Hudson County landmarks — legendary political boss Frank Hague and the black steel colossus known as the Pulaski Skyway — will be the topics of discussion Thursday, Jan. 24, as author Steven Hart come to Symposia Bookstore to read from his book “The Last Three Miles: Politics, Murder, and the Construction of America’s First Superhighway,” published by The New Press. Hart, a journalist and freelance writer, has delved into the troubled history of the Skyway and the labor war that erupted during its construction in the early years of the Depression — a clash so violent that local newspapers called it “the war of the meadows.” He shows how a conflict between Hague and a former ally helped fuel the conflict that marked a turning point in Hague’s career as a political boss with the power to intimidate presidents. Hart also explains the Skyway’s place in history as the only surviving link in America’s first superhighway project, and how flaws in its design made it a hazard to life and limb from the day it opened in 1932. “The Last Three Miles” has been spotlighted in the New York Times and the Star-Ledger, and highly praised by noted authors such as Henry Petroski, Les Standiford and Christian Bauman, and he will be signing and selling copies after his talk, which is set for Thursday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. in Symposia Bookstore, 510 Washington Street, Hoboken, N.J. |
