Book Reading – “The Last Three Miles” by Steven Hart
Thursday, January 24th, 2008
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Symposia Bookstore
510 Washington St.
Hoboken, NJ 07030
United States
Map and Directions
Information: Two Hudson County landmarks — legendary political boss Frank Hague and the black steel colossus known as the Pulaski Skyway — will be the topics of discussion Thursday, Jan. 24, as author Steven Hart come to Symposia Bookstore to read from his book “The Last Three Miles:
Politics, Murder, and the Construction of America’s First Superhighway,” published by The New Press.

Hart, a journalist and freelance writer, has delved into the troubled history of the Skyway and the labor war that erupted during its construction in the early years of the Depression — a clash so violent that local newspapers called it “the war of the meadows.” He shows how a conflict between Hague and a former ally helped fuel the conflict that marked a turning point in Hague’s career as a political boss with the power to intimidate presidents. Hart also explains the Skyway’s place in history as the only surviving link in America’s first superhighway project, and how flaws in its design made it a hazard to life and limb from the day it opened in 1932.

“The Last Three Miles” has been spotlighted in the New York Times and the Star-Ledger, and highly praised by noted authors such as Henry Petroski, Les Standiford and Christian Bauman, and he will be signing and selling copies after his talk, which is set for Thursday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. in Symposia Bookstore, 510 Washington Street, Hoboken, N.J.
07030.

HAVE FUN IN THE AFTEROON:

Afternoon activities for children at Symposia Bookstore
Organized by Puppetonia – Land of Music and Puppets

The long, cold, dreary afternoons of the winter season can be challenging for parents with small children. No worries! Symposia is opening its doors to a series of new afternoon activities designed for children under six years old.
The series will feature special arts and crafts projects, actions songs, and exciting new puppet shows every week.

Our various arts and crafts projects teach children practical skills, encourage them to think creatively, and show them how to work well with others. And of course, they’re a lot of fun! The Puppetonia music and puppet shows also teach children more than ABC’s and 123’s. The shows incorporate important social skills, early academics, thinking skills, motor skills, and self-expression. The music is fun and upbeat, and the children are encouraged to move to the rhythm, follow verbal instructions, practice sequential movements, and have a great time. The puppets are friendly and cuddly, bringing to life old bedtime stories or funny incidents that the children encounter in their daily lives.

Afternoon schedule:
Tuesdays: 2 pm to 4 pm – Toys, crafts time and face painting
Tuesdays: 4 pm to 5 pm – Music and puppet show
Updates on other afternoon shows on www.puppetonia.com or (201) 963-1739

Other shows organized by Puppetonia at Symposia Bookstore
Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri – 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. – Music and puppet shows
Birthday parties, day care or school events.

I’m not sure how I ended up in an art exhibit
A digital camera that doesn’t work sometimes. A trip to Italy in April 2006 and one to Maine in September 2007. Really cool people and places that I felt like taking pictures of. My desire to blow up up these pictures (thanks Mimosa Digital!) buy a bunch of frames from Ikea and Pearl Paint and finally decorate our barren walls. A random conversation with Cornel. And well, here you are. No message, no inspiration… just a bunch of pictures I took that somehow ended up on these walls and will soon be back in our living room, where they belong.

Free event – lots of apple pie!
