Information: Why We Fight is a documentary film directed by Eugene Jarecki that won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. The documentary was first released on January 17, 2006, exactly 45 years after Dwight D. Eisenhower’s farewell address. An unflinching look at the anatomy of the American war machine, weaving unforgettable personal stories with commentary by a “who’s who” of military and beltway insiders. The film surveys the scorched landscape of a half-century’s military adventures, asking how and telling why a nation of, by, and for the people has become the savings-and-loan of a system whose survival depends on a state of constant war.

Independent Fim Night: “UnWound”
Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Time: 8:00 PM
Location: Symposia Bookstore
510 Washington St.
Hoboken, NJ 07030
United States
Map and Directions
Information: “UnWound,” from producer/director Jeff Cioletti, explores the world of toy robots, beginning with the earliest Japanese scrap-metal pieces from the 1940s. It tracks more than six decades of history, including the modern-day remote-controlled battling robot craze. Old favorites
such as Machine Man, Mr. Machine and Rock Em Sock Em Robots make appearances, as do toys based on TV and movie characters from the 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond. (Yes, good friends such as Robby from “Forbidden Planet,” Robot from “Lost in Space” and Star Wars legends R2-D2 and C-3PO feature prominently). The film incorporates insight from
writers, collectors and academics, as well as a visit to
Pennsylvania’s Toy Robot Museum?home to more than 3,500 pieces.

But the centerpiece of the film is a suspenseful toy auction in which a man anxiously waits for his childhood toy to go on the block. Items from what’s known as the “Golden Age” of space toys tend to fetch eye-popping sums when they go under the gavel.

The Hoboken Digital Film Society screening series will continue at Symposia on a monthly basis. For information on how to submit a film for inclusion, send an e-mail to Jeff Cioletti at jcioletti@fadproductions.com.

Submissions from anywhere in the world are welcome.

“A Refugee Camp in the Heart of the City”

Location: Prospect Park
Long Meadow at Grand Army Plaza
New York, NY
United States
Map and Directions
Information: : “A Refugee Camp in the Heart of the City”
A Doctors Without Borders Exhibit in New York’s Central and Prospect Parks.

Imagine war breaks out in your hometown. You flee with your family, friends, and neighbors. You walk for days or weeks, holding your children or siblings and the few possessions you have salvaged. You need shelter, water, and food, and you may need medical care. How would you survive?

Doctors Without Borders’ interactive outdoor exhibit brings to light day-to-day living conditions of the 33 million people around the world who have been forced to flee their homes because of war or conflict. Constructed from actual materials used in the field, the exhibit explores the challenges that refugees and internally displaced people face in finding shelter, food, and clean water — all basic elements of survival. Visitors enter the tents that provide shelter, taste the biscuits that are used to combat malnutrition, and learn how Doctors Without Borders approaches basic health care and epidemic control. Free guided tours by experienced Doctors Without Borders aid workers are open to the public.
